Letterbook and telegrams, 1862-1865.

Letterbook and copies of telegrams sent by French as chief commissary (1862-1865). Letterbook contains correspondence from French to Col. L.B. Northrup, commisary general; Maj. Gen. G.W. Smith; and various commissaries and agents in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia pertaining to the provisioning of troops (Sept. 12, 1862-May 9, 1863). Copies of telegrams concern the procurement, transportation, and distribution of subsistence stores. Originals were sent to commissary officers in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee (July 4, 1864-April 1, 1865).
